Never the Blues, will be awaiting the outcome of the Crusaders v Sharks game before discovering they will go to the red and the Stormers were really problems for visitors to New South Wales.
Lachie Munro balanced with 16 points (a try, three penalties and a conversion), Ali Williams try to seal the outcome and Luke McAlister adding the conversion and a penalty of his own.
"Play-off rugby is moving in the rest of the competition and we do as well for the boys tonight," said captain Keven Mealamu Blues.
"It would not be enough in the final of the football, but the result when you get this close.
"The Waratahs are a really good attacking side and they played very well in the rucks. We have strengthened in the second half and it took care of the ball a lot better if we kept them under pressure."
The Waratahs were always going to be because of their injury list, but they fought valiantly and recording effort thanks to Tom Carter and Lachie Turner.
The Australians were without the likes of Tatafu Polota-Nau, Daniel Halangahu, Al Baxter Luke Burgess and Berrick Barnes to participate, Drew Mitchell and Wycliff Palu - absences and eventually was crucial.
