West Indian batsmen have won their first bout against Bangladeshi spinners after they denied them of any wicket in the first one-day international and posted  a staggering 298-4  at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday. The two sides had their first battle in a Twenty20 International, which Bangladesh won by three wickets, but that can easily be said a warm-up game before the real test of character came in the one-dayer. And the Caribbeans took no time to show they have done enough homework leading into the series. West Indies’ inability to play spin bowlers is evident in their recent cricket history but the current squad did not want to take that tag with them and were prepared to learn the technique that would enable them to handle it in the subcontinent. To hone their skills against slow bowlers they had a seven-day camp in Dubai at the ICC global cricket academy where they invited left-arm spinners from Afghanistan and UAE to bowl in the nets. Since arriving in Dhaka on October 4 they always mentioned that they are aware of the spin threat of Bangladesh but at the same time added that it won’t be a problem as they are well prepared for it. And on Thursday they proved it was not just a mere statement as they thrashed the spinners all across the park to post that total on a slow wicket and an even slower outfield. Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss again and readily asked them to bat hoping to restrict them to a total that could be achievable. Pace bowlers lacked the penetrating power despite having two new balls from each end as per new ODI playing condition, leaving the onus on the spinners. But their all efforts went in vain as Bangladesh had to wait until the 42nd over to get their first breakthrough. Mushfiq tried his every option apart from Mohammad Ashraful only to see them all struggling against Lendl Simmons (122) and Marlon Samuels (71). During the entire innings the Bangladeshi spinners raised the prospect of a breakthrough only once when Sakib al Hasan got the edge of Samuels with the batsman on 46, but it went between the legs of Mushfiq. The way the West Indian batsmen, including injured Adrian Barath, applied themselves against the spin bowlers  it not only proved their capability but also give an indication of what to expect from them in the series that has two more ODIs and two Test matches. Rubel Hossain had a two-wicket burst in one over of his last spell before ending with 3-65 while Shafiul Islam also took a wicket finally to save the blushes of the Bangladeshi bowlers, but they too showed there is a lot of room for improvement.
